Quick FAQ
What does the score mean?
Our 1-10 rating weighs: 1:1 parity (30%), VPP/battery programs (25%), import rate (20%), export rate (15%), monthly fees (5%), contract flexibility (3%), and provider reputation (2%). Plans that offer 1:1 buyback or reward battery ownership score highest.
What's "Export" vs "Import"?
Export is what they pay you for excess solar sent to the grid. Import is what you pay for power from the grid. With a battery, you can store solar and use it at night instead of importing — and export strategically when rates are highest.
What does RTW/Wholesale mean?
Your buyback rate varies with the real-time ERCOT wholesale market. Can be very profitable in summer peaks. With battery storage, you can time your exports to capture the highest wholesale prices.
What is a 1:1 rate plan?
You pay and earn the same rate per kWh. If you pay 15¢ for power from the grid, you also earn 15¢ for solar you send back. Simple and transparent, though the rate itself may be higher than other plans.
What is a VPP (Virtual Power Plant)?
VPP plans offer extra savings when you let the provider dispatch your home battery during peak grid demand. Your battery helps stabilize the grid, and you earn credits or a lower rate in return. Since you already have a battery with your solar system, VPP plans are a great way to maximize your investment.
Why solar + battery?
Battery storage lets you use your own solar power around the clock, export when rates peak, participate in VPP programs, and keep the lights on during outages. It's the best way to maximize your solar investment in Texas.
Do I need to call my current provider?
No. The new provider handles everything. Your old provider will send a final bill with any remaining credits.
